Gaja Barbaresco 2022

Description

Gaja Barbaresco 2022 is the iconic Gaja house wine and one of the most important benchmarks of the entire Barbaresco region. The wine is made from 100% 'Nebbiolo' grapes, selected from 14 family-owned vineyards in the communes of Barbaresco and Treiso. This wine best reflects the Gaja philosophy - elegance, expression of terroir and precise winemaking.

The bouquet of aromas is very complex and constantly changing in the glass. Cherries, strawberries, orange peel, rose petals and violets are felt. Then white pepper, licorice, tobacco, mint, graphite and subtle balsamic notes open.

The wine is rich, but at the same time extremely elegant. Ripe, soft velvety tannins provide structure, while lively acidity maintains energy and freshness. The taste is dominated by red cherries, wild berries, orange peel, spices and mineral nuances. The aftertaste is long, refined and very harmonious.

2022 was an extremely hot and dry year in the Barbaresco region, but the best producers, including Gaja, managed to preserve freshness and terroir character. Many critics call this vintage a paradox - despite the heat, the best wines are characterized by unexpected freshness, balance and aromatic elegance.

After fermentation and long maceration, the wine is aged for about a year in French oak barrels, using only a small portion of new oak. The wine is then aged for about a year in large tanks. In recent years, Gaja has started using a small portion of fermentation with bunches, in order to maintain even more freshness and aromatic tension in warm vintages.

James Suckling

Fresh and restrained wine, with an exquisite mix of graphite, orange peel, dried cherries and strawberries, as well as whiffs of potpourri and licorice. Medium- to full-bodied, it displays velvety, ripe tannins with tight-knit acidity and a juicy style, despite the more biting finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.

About brand

The Gaja family settled in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy in the mid-17th century. They have been producing wine in the Barbaresco area since 1859. Four generations of dedicated work and a noble pursuit of making top-quality wines have made the Gaja name synonymous with Italian winemaking excellence worldwide. Today, the fifth generation – Gaia, Giovanni, and Rossana Gaja – continues the family traditions, leading this legendary winery.

Currently, Gaja in Piedmont produces both classic expressions of the ‘Nebbiolo’ grape – Barbarescos and Barolos – and innovative “Langhe DOC” red and white wines from international grape varieties. The family also owns two estates in Tuscany: “Ca’Marcanda” in Bolgheri, famous for its “Super Tuscan” wines, and “Pieve S. Restituta” in the Montalcino area, producing “Brunello di Montalcino” wines. Additionally, a joint project with Alberto Graci in Sicily, at the foot of Mount Etna, testifies to the family’s constant pursuit of innovation and quality.

The Gaja family firmly believes that the true spirit and quality of wine are born in the vineyards themselves. Therefore, the greatest attention is paid to vineyard care: searching for climate change-resistant clones, limiting yields, growing other crops between vineyard rows to enrich the soil and help retain moisture and protect the harvest from heat. The highest quality standards are applied to all farms: grapes are grown only in family-owned vineyards, adhering to ecological and sustainability principles, with particular attention to soil quality and biodiversity.
