Niepoort Lagar de Baixo Bairrada DOC 2021, a testament to Dirk Niepoort's pioneering spirit, offering a fresh and captivating expression of Portugal's Baga grape.
Inspired by Cru Beaujolais, this 100% Baga wine showcases a bright medley of dark and red fruits layered with earth and spice. It is juicy and dry, with charming fruit that pops on the palate, accented by subtle oak, chalky limestone minerality, and fine-grained tannins.
Dirk Niepoort, a pivotal figure in modern Portuguese winemaking, ventured beyond the Douro in 2012 to purchase Quinta de Baixo in Bairrada, captivated by the region's cool Atlantic-influenced climate and limestone-rich soils. His passion for light, elegant red wines with enormous aging potential led him to accumulate old Baga vineyards, some with vines over 60 years old.
The grapes for Lagar de Baixo 2021 were hand-harvested and partially foot-trodden in open granite lagares. Fermentation took place in a combination of lagares, stainless steel tanks, and large wooden vats.
The wine was aged for 19 months in large 2,500-liter oak barrels (tonels), where it also underwent malolactic fermentation. It was bottled unfiltered and unfined.
Serves 16-18 °C with venison, partridge, venison, pork and bean stews. Vegetarian options: dishes with legumes (red beans, lentils).
Niepoort is an independent family business since 1842. Through five generations, the business passed successfully from one Niepoort to the next Niepoort and in most cases older and younger generation worked side by side for a long period.
