Red dry
Terre Nere Dagala di Bocca d'Orzo Etna Rosso 2023 is a highly concentrated, local-character Etna Rosso from the Bocca d'Orzo vineyard in the Randazzo area, on the northern slopes of Etna. The wine is made from 100% ‘Nerello Mascalese’, grown on a plot of about 0.75 hectares at an altitude of 800 m, from 70-80 year old vines, and the annual production is very small - about 800 bottles.
The wine opens in a penetrating and layered aroma: ripe red fruits are intertwined with notes of wild herbs, wet stones, menthol and subtle spices.
The wine is structured, complex and firm, but not harsh. Fine tannins give shape, the acidity maintains tension, and the fruitiness remains precise, leaning more towards wild berries than sweet ripeness. This is Etna Rosso, where strength is not based on mass, but on texture, altitude and volcanic energy.
Terroir is particularly important here. The very name “dagala” refers to an “island” – a place separated from the surrounding areas, which was preserved after the 1981 lava flow. This exceptional plot is considered a kind of monopole type cru, and the deep volcanic soil with a small amount of stones and northern exposure give the wine a more rigorous, precise and mineral expression.
The winemaking uses controlled temperature fermentation, followed by spontaneous malolactic fermentation and 14 months of aging in French oak barrels, followed by 1 month in stainless steel tanks. As a result, the 2023 vintage combines the clarity of ‘Nerello Mascalese’ with a deeper texture and a long, spicy aftertaste.
Serve at 16-18° C with lasagna, pizza, poultry, especially duck, crispy pork, lamb, cured ham.
Tenuta delle Terre Nere is a prestigious Sicilian estate located on the northern slopes of Mount Etna, at 600–1,000 meters above sea level, near the town of Randazzo. Founded in 2002 by renowned Italian wine ambassador Marco de Grazia, it quickly became one of the most recognized wineries dedicated to expressing this unique terroir. The volcanic soils, rich in minerals, give the wines their distinctive character, while organic practices and meticulous handwork ensure authenticity and the highest quality.
Tenuta delle Terre Nere wines are celebrated for their elegance, finesse, and minerality, often described as Burgundy-style wines from Sicily.
Red wines – made primarily from ‘Nerello Mascalese’ with a small proportion of ‘Nerello Cappuccio’. They reveal expressive red fruit aromas, subtle notes of spice and herbs, silky tannins, and a mineral-driven, long-lasting finish. Often compared to ‘Pinot Noir’ for their structure and aromatic profile.
White wines – based on ‘Carricante’, stand out for their freshness, citrus and white flower notes, refined minerality, and precise acidity.
One of the estate’s greatest strengths is its “cru” philosophy. Tenuta delle Terre Nere was among the first in Etna to vinify single-vineyard wines. Each cru has a unique character and expression: Calderara Sottana, Feudo di Mezzo, Guardiola, San Lorenzo, Santo Spirito, among others. These sites showcase Etna’s extraordinary soil diversity and allow the creation of highly refined and complex wines.
Tenuta delle Terre Nere wines are matured with a delicate use of oak, enriching structure without overshadowing the terroir’s authenticity. Etna Rosso and Etna Bianco are best enjoyed young, when their fruit and freshness are most vibrant. The estate’s cru red wines, however, possess significant aging potential—over time they become increasingly complex, revealing the full depth and refinement of Etna’s terroir.
