Allemand Thierry Cuvee Cornas Reynard AOC 2020

Description

Reynard is Thierry Allemand’s most prestigious wine, produced from old 'Syrah' vines in the Reynard lieu-dit, one of the most renowned slopes of Cornas. Granite soils, very low yields and traditional winemaking result in a wine of great concentration, yet with a precise structure, considered one of the benchmark expressions of Cornas AOC.

The nose is dominated by blackcurrants, blackberries and black cherries, complemented by notes of violets, black olives, leather, graphite and iron. With decanting, layers of incense, smoke, liquorice and subtle cured meat nuances emerge, characteristics of the finest Northern Rhône 'Syrah' wines.

On the palate, the wine is concentrated and deeply structured while maintaining remarkable balance. The ripe dark fruit core is supported by vibrant acidity, dense yet finely integrated tannins and the strong mineral tension imparted by the granite terroir. The finish is long and complex, revealing layers of black berries, graphite, pepper, iron and savoury spice notes. This is a wine with excellent ageing potential, recommended to be cellared for at least 8–10 years and capable of evolving beautifully over several decades under ideal conditions.

The grapes are fermented with whole clusters using indigenous yeasts. The wine is aged for approximately 24 months in old foudres and used oak barrels, then bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 16–18 °C with lamb, pork, grilled meats, or aged cheeses.

About brand

Thierry Allemand – the master of Cornas terroir, shaping the story of Syrah

Thierry Allemand is one of the most renowned producers of the Cornas AOC in the Northern Rhône Valley, France. From the very beginning, his ambition has been to create wines that express the true character of Cornas and its unique terroir. He started his career working in a wine warehouse, gradually acquiring vineyard parcels and patiently building his estate with a clear vision: to let the land speak for itself.

His wines come from small, carefully tended plots, each with its own personality — from Les Chaillots to Reynard. Some of these cuvées are produced in extremely limited quantities, often only a few hundred bottles per year, which has made them highly sought after by collectors worldwide.

Allemand’s winemaking philosophy is rooted in natural expression and minimal intervention. Fermentation is carried out with native yeasts, often using whole clusters, and with as little mechanical manipulation as possible. Sulphur is used sparingly, and the wines are aged for 18 to 24 months, depending on the vintage, primarily in old, neutral oak barrels.

After aging, the wines are bottled unfiltered, preserving their purity and structure. This approach results in wines of remarkable finesse, defined by mineral tension, depth, and an exceptionally pure expression of Syrah. Aromatically, they move from dark berries and black pepper to earthy, savory notes that evolve beautifully with time.

Today, Thierry Allemand is regarded not merely as a producer, but as one of the defining voices of Cornas. His work has influenced an entire generation of winemakers and stands as a benchmark for how tradition, restraint, and terroir-driven philosophy can create modern wines with profound depth and longevity.
