Pomerol is one of the smallest yet most important appellations in the Bordeaux region. Although it has no official Grand Cru classification system, it produces some of the most expensive and sought-after wines in the world. The region's uniqueness is determined by its soil: sand, gravel, and the highly prized blue clay with iron oxide (crasse de fer) deposits. This particular soil allows Merlot grapes to reach optimal ripeness and gives the wine exceptional complexity.
The main star of this appellation is the Merlot grape, which usually makes up 70 to 100 percent of the blend. It gives the wine its characteristic silky texture, with aromas of plums, dark berries, damp earth, and truffles. The blend is often complemented by Cabernet Franc grapes, which add additional structure, floral, and savory notes. Although Pomerol wines are appealing relatively young, the best examples can age in oak barrels and bottles for 15–30 years.
