The Dominance of Mourvèdre and the Provence Sun

The Bandol appellation stands out from the rest of Provence due to its special focus on Mourvèdre grapes. The scorching sun, dry climate, and cooling Mediterranean breezes create ideal conditions for this demanding, late-ripening variety. The calcareous, stony soil forces the roots to dig deep in search of moisture. The resulting red wine features a dark, opaque color, powerful tannins, and notes of leather, black truffles, black pepper, and wild blackberries.

Rosés with Character and Food Pairing

While Provence is globally associated with very light, pale rosé wines, Bandol rosé wine is different. Thanks to the influence of Mourvèdre, it has much more structure, complexity, and can even be cellared for a few years. It pairs perfectly with Mediterranean cuisine, especially fish and exotic dishes. The powerful Bandol red wines are the ultimate wine for meat—ideal companions for beef steaks or game stews.

Dažniausiai užduodami klausimai

Does Bandol red wine need to be aged for a long time?
Yes. While modern winemaking techniques make it approachable earlier, it is recommended to cellar the best red Bandol wines for at least 5 to 10 years. In their youth, they can be highly tannic and closed, but over time they reveal impressive elegance.

Is it necessary to decant this wine?
A young red Bandol must be decanted for at least 2 hours so that oxygen can open up its rich aromatic bouquet and soften the firm tannins. Older vintages require less aeration.

What other grapes are used in this appellation?
While the foundation is Mourvèdre (which must constitute at least 50% of the red blends), Grenache and Cinsault are often added to impart additional fruitiness and softness to the wine.
