This Piedmontese gem surprises with a variety of styles—from very light, fruit-forward versions to dark, serious, and oak-aged drinks.
Although the Barbera grape naturally has low tannins, many winemakers in the Alba appellation choose to age the wine in small oak barrels. This provides the wine with added structure and notes of vanilla and spice. If you seek freshness, opt for wines aged in stainless steel; if you want richness, look for the touch of oak.
Thanks to its pronounced acidity, Barbera is an ideal gastronomic companion. The wine perfectly cuts through richer dishes: it is excellent with roasted pork, cured meat platters, pepperoni pizza, or classic Italian pasta with tomato sauce.
Both are made from the same grape in Piedmont, but wines from the Alba zone (grown near Barolo and Barbaresco) are often slightly fuller-bodied, feature darker berry aromas, and are more frequently oak-aged. Meanwhile, Asti wines are typically lighter and more focused on bright acidity and floral aromas.
Unlike Nebbiolo-based wines, Barbera is best enjoyed while it is young and vibrant, usually within 3–5 years of the vintage. The exception is oak-aged versions from top producers, which can evolve for 7–10 years.
