Although this is a regional-level appellation, Bourgogne AOC wines from top Burgundy producers often exhibit exceptional quality. When choosing, the most important factor is deciding the style of drink you are looking for.
White wines are crafted from Chardonnay grapes—they are light, featuring aromas of green apples, citrus, and subtle minerality. Reds are made from the Pinot Noir variety, thus impressing with soft tannins and vibrant notes of red berries, such as cherries and raspberries.
Bourgogne AOC wines are among the most versatile in gastronomy. The red pairs perfectly with light meat appetizers, poultry, veal steaks, and soft cheeses. The white wine will flawlessly complement creamy pasta dishes, roasted white fish, and fresh spring salads.
For Bourgogne AOC wine, grapes can be sourced from anywhere within the Burgundy region, which makes these wines generally lighter, quicker to mature, and more focused on fruitiness. "Village" level wines are produced from vineyards in a specific village, meaning they have more structure, stricter production regulations, and better reflect a specific terroir.
Because these wines stand out with delicate aromas and freshness, it is best to serve the whites well chilled, around 10–12 °C. The red Pinot Noir is recommended to be served slightly cooler than typical reds—around 14–16 °C.
