Calatayud DO is a rugged and mountainous region in Spain's Aragon area, recognized on the global wine map as one of the best sources of the powerful Garnacha grape. Here, exceptionally concentrated, sun-kissed, and mineral-driven red wines are produced from old vines (Viñas Viejas). If you are looking for intense fruitiness, a full body, and an incredibly good price-to-quality ratio for the barbecue season, this appellation is made for you.

The climate of the Calatayud DO region is extreme: summer days are intensely hot and dry, while nights are bitterly cold. It is this large diurnal temperature shift that prevents the berries from losing their acidity. The poor, stony soils, rich in limestone and slate, force the vines to dig deep roots, creating a distinct minerality in the wines.
The primary focus and pride of the region is Garnacha Tinta. Vast expanses of old vines have survived here, many reaching 50 years of age or more. Such bushes yield very few berries, but they are of extraordinary concentration.

Old-vine Garnacha drinks beautifully just a few years after the harvest when intense fruitiness still dominates. However, the best oak-aged examples possess excellent potential and can evolve in the cellar for 5 to 8 years.
Yes. Because these wines exhibit great concentration and often a higher percentage of alcohol, pouring them into a decanter for 45 minutes before tasting will help the wine open up, soften the perception of alcohol, and highlight the dark berry aromas.
