Cigales DO is a unique and historically significant Spanish wine appellation located in the rugged Castile and León region. While historically famous for its exceptional rosé wines (Clarete), today it also produces incredibly powerful and complex red wines that easily rival the structure of their famous neighbors.
Read moreSituated at high altitudes, the Cigales region experiences an extreme continental climate with massive diurnal temperature shifts. This allows the Tempranillo grapes (locally known as Tinta del País) to retain their natural freshness while accumulating stunning aromatic concentration. The soil, rich in limestone, sand, and large stones, imparts exceptional minerality and deep color to the wines.
The full-bodied Cigales red wines are a perfect match for grilled beef, lamb, venison, and hearty traditional Spanish stews. The rosés are an excellent choice for tapas, rice dishes (paella), or roasted poultry. For a gathering with friends, try pairing these wines with cured meats from our wine snacks selection.
Although both regions use the same Tempranillo grape in similar climates, Cigales wines often display more pronounced, darker fruitiness and slightly rounder, softer tannins in their youth, making them more approachable earlier.
The rosé wines should be well chilled to 10–12 °C (50–54 °F), while the robust red wines are best served at 16–18 °C (60–64 °F) to fully release their spice and volume.
