The Viognier grape was once on the brink of extinction, but today it is experiencing a true renaissance thanks to the Condrieu region. This appellation, located on the steep granitic slopes of the Rhône River, requires immense manual labor. However, the result is worth the effort—a highly concentrated, low-acidity, yet full-bodied and creamy white wine. In the glass, it reveals not only the sweetness of stone fruits but also subtle notes of almonds and honey.
Although Condrieu boasts a very rich aromatic profile, its inherent elegance allows for fantastic food pairings. It is an excellent wine for fish and seafood (especially lobster and scallops), mildly spiced Asian cuisine, and traditional French cheeses, such as the local Rigotte de Condrieu goat cheese.
Is it recommended to age this wine for many years?
Unlike many other top-tier French white wines, Condrieu is best enjoyed young to fully appreciate its aromas. It is recommended to drink it within the first 3 to 5 years after the vintage, while its floral and fruity notes are most vibrant.
Why are Condrieu wines relatively expensive?
Due to the very small size of the region, extremely steep slopes (which prevent mechanization), and low yields of the Viognier grape, production costs are enormous, and the number of bottles produced is highly limited.
What is the optimal serving temperature?
It is recommended to serve it chilled to 10–12 °C. If over-chilled, its magnificent bouquet will be muted; if served too warm, the alcohol may become overpowering.
