Cortona DOC

1–1 of 1

Cortona DOC is an exceptional appellation in southeastern Tuscany that boldly breaks from regional traditions. While the vast majority of Tuscany takes pride in Sangiovese grapes, Cortona shines on the global wine map as Italy's Syrah capital. If you are looking for a powerful, full-bodied red wine breathing with black pepper, dark berries, and deep structure, the Cortona selection will not disappoint.

What makes Cortona DOC stand out in Tuscany?

The historic city of Cortona, perched on a hill near Lake Trasimeno, boasts a unique microclimate. Hot summer days, cool nights, and deep clay soils create conditions strikingly similar to France's famous Rhône Valley. Although white wines from Chardonnay and Grechetto are also produced here, the heart of the Cortona DOC appellation belongs to the Syrah grape. Winemakers do not need to hide this international variety under the IGT ("Super Tuscan") category—since 1999, Cortona has officially recognized Syrah as its primary and most important DOC-level grape.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Cortona wines worth cellaring for a long time?

Yes, high-quality Cortona Syrah is built for longevity. Due to the firm tannic structure and powerful extract, the best oak-aged bottles can successfully evolve in a cellar for 10 to 15 years, acquiring captivating shades of leather, tobacco, and forest floor.

Is it necessary to decant these red wines?

We highly recommend decanting young (up to 5–7 years old) Cortona DOC wines, especially those made from Syrah. Pouring the wine into a decanter for at least 45–60 minutes before serving will soften the tannins and allow the powerful pepper and berry aromatics to fully unfold.

Are sweet wines also produced in the Cortona appellation?

Yes, to honor tradition, the exceptional dessert wine Vin Santo della Valdichiana is also produced here. It is pressed from dried white grapes and aged extensively in small wooden barrels. It is an excellent choice for classic Italian desserts.
