The Legendary Sun-Baked Slopes

The name "Côte-Rôtie" translates to "roasted slope," perfectly describing the incredibly steep, south-facing vineyards that receive maximum sunshine. This powerful red wine is grown on precipitous terraces of granite and schist where harvesting is only possible by hand. The unique terroir provides the wine with deep structure, peppery notes, and flinty minerality that sets it apart worldwide.

The Aromatic Harmony of Syrah and Viognier

A legendary tradition of the region allows winemakers to co-ferment up to 20% of white Viognier with red Syrah. This technique stabilizes the deep color and enriches the bouquet with exotic floral and peach notes, delivering a velvety texture. It is a magnificent wine for meat, pairing spectacularly with wild game, dry-aged steaks, or duck with truffles. It also serves as a highly prestigious wine gift.

What is the difference between Côte Brune and Côte Blonde?
These are the two most famous slopes. Côte Brune features darker, iron-rich soils, producing robust and powerful wines. Côte Blonde features lighter limestone, yielding more elegant, floral, and softer expressions.

What is the typical cellaring potential for Côte-Rôtie?
Côte-Rôtie possesses phenomenal longevity. Bottles from premium estates can evolve beautifully in a cellar for 10, 20, or even 30 years, gradually developing complex notes of leather, tobacco, and forest floor.

Should I decant Côte-Rôtie before serving?
Yes, it is highly recommended. A younger vintage should be decanted for at least 2 hours to allow the tight tannins to soften. For very old vintages, it is safer to open the bottle an hour early and pour directly into glasses.
