Read moreThis mountainous region is famous for its very specific grape assortment. The main white grape is Chardonnay, which produces both crisp and oak-aged wines characterized by profound minerality and nutty aromas. Another crucial white variety is Savagnin, traditionally used for the famous oxidative Vin Jaune (yellow wine). Among reds, the native Poulsard (Ploussard) and Trousseau reign alongside classic Pinot Noir. The red wines typically stand out with a pale color, light body, and elegant notes of wild strawberries, spices, and forest floor.
Due to their exceptional structure, saline minerality, and nutty notes, Jura wines demand very specific and rich food pairings:
What is Vin Jaune (Yellow Wine)?
This is the unique pride of the Jura region, made exclusively from Savagnin grapes. It is aged for at least six years in partially filled oak barrels under a special veil of yeast (voile). This highly specific process gives the wine powerful aromas of curry, walnuts, almonds, and dried fruits, along with incredible longevity.
Are Côtes du Jura wines suitable for cellaring?
Yes, particularly the whites. High-quality Chardonnay and Savagnin, as well as the better Trousseau red wines, have excellent aging potential and can gracefully evolve in the bottle for 10 years or more.
