Burgundy borders the Champagne region, sharing similar climatic conditions and cultivating the same noble grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. It is from these grapes that the finest Crémant de Bourgogne sparkling wine is produced. Under appellation rules, the wine must age on its lees in the bottle (traditional method) for a minimum of 9 months, with superior examples aging for 12 or even 24 months. This imparts deep aromas of toast, brioche, and almonds, while retaining a crisp apple and citrus freshness.
Crémant de Bourgogne is incredibly food-friendly. It acts perfectly as an aperitif, yet its structure allows it to be enjoyed throughout a meal. It is a flawless wine for fish, oysters, seafood, and roasted poultry. It beautifully cuts through rich cream sauces and soft cheeses (such as Brie). It serves as a luxurious, yet often much more accessible, French wine alternative to Champagne.
How does Crémant differ from Champagne?
Both are made using the exact same traditional method, but Champagne can only be produced within the Champagne region, whereas Crémant is produced in other French regions (Burgundy, Alsace, Loire, etc.). The flavor profile is very similar, though Crémant de Bourgogne is often slightly fruitier and more approachable in its youth.
What do the terms Blanc de Blancs and Blanc de Noirs mean on labels?
"Blanc de Blancs" means the white sparkling wine is made exclusively from white grapes (Chardonnay). "Blanc de Noirs" indicates a white sparkling wine made entirely from dark-skinned grapes (Pinot Noir), pressed without any skin contact.
How should this sparkling wine be served?
It is recommended to thoroughly chill the wine and serve it at 6–8 °C. It is best enjoyed in tulip-shaped glasses, which allow its complex yeasty and fruity aromas to unfold fully.
