The Best Kept Secret of Northern Italy

While the Piedmont region is most commonly associated with powerful Nebbiolo wines, the native Grignolino grape has a dedicated cult following. The name derives from the local word "grignole," meaning grape seeds, of which this variety has an unusually high amount. As a result, this red wine features firm, grippy tannins that contrast fascinatingly with its very light body and delicate fruitiness.

What Food to Pair It With?

Thanks to its crisp acidity and dry profile, Grignolino d'Asti DOC is the perfect companion for Italian appetizers (antipasti). It pairs wonderfully with cured meats, salami, light pasta dishes, and poultry. It is a highly refreshing Italian wine, ideal for spring and summer picnics.

Can this wine be aged for a long time?
Grignolino wines are generally not designed for long-term cellaring. They are best enjoyed young—within the first 1 to 3 years after the vintage—when their spicy and fresh berry aromas are most vibrant.

Why is this wine so pale?
The skins of this grape variety contain very little pigment. Therefore, even after maceration, the wine only acquires a pale ruby color with brick-red hues, often resembling a dark rosé wine.

What is the best serving temperature?
Because of its light body, it is recommended to serve this wine slightly cooler than standard reds—at around 14–15 °C.
