The Magic of Volcanic Soil

Irpinia is a true gem of Southern Italy. Thanks to its high altitude and volcanic soils (Mount Vesuvius is nearby), the wines produced here differ significantly from traditional hot-climate southern wines. The local white wine (crafted from Fiano and Greco) delights with razor-sharp acidity, alongside notes of smoke and hazelnuts, while the reds stand out for their complexity and elegance.

The Power of the Aglianico Grape

The main red star of the region is the Aglianico grape, often referred to as the "Barolo of the South." This premium Italian wine astounds with firm tannins, a deep ruby color, and aromas of dark berries, leather, and earth. Due to its bold structure, it is a perfect companion for slow-braised meats, game, and long-aged cheeses.

Are Irpinia DOC wines worth cellaring?
Absolutely. Red Aglianico wines boast incredible longevity and can age in a cellar for a decade or more. Interestingly, even the white wines from this region, such as those in the style of Fiano di Avellino, can successfully evolve in the bottle for 5 to 8 years.

Does this red wine need to be decanted?
Because the Aglianico grape has very firm tannins, a young wine from this region must be decanted for at least 1 to 2 hours before serving to allow its full bouquet of aromas to open up.

How does this appellation differ from Taurasi DOCG?
Irpinia DOC covers a broader territory and allows for a wider variety of wine styles (both white and red). Taurasi DOCG is a prestigious subzone within this region dedicated exclusively to long-aged Aglianico red wines.
