Menetou-Salon AOC

1–0 of 0

Menetou-Salon AOC is an exceptional appellation in France's Loire Valley (Vallée de la Loire) that is increasingly being discovered by lovers of high-quality wine. Located right next to the famous Sancerre region, this zone offers the exact same style of ultra-crisp, mineral-driven white wines from Sauvignon Blanc, as well as subtle reds from the Pinot Noir grape. It is the perfect choice for those who appreciate elegance and an outstanding price-to-quality ratio.

Menetou-Salon AOC – the Sancerre alternative

While the name Sancerre echoes loudest worldwide, neighboring Menetou-Salon shares the same unique Kimmeridgian soil (composed of limestone and marine fossils). This specific ground gives the local wines that recognizable "flinty" and wet-stone minerality. Because the appellation is less commercially hyped, you can find incredibly high-level wines here that rival the structure and complexity of the region's best examples, but at a more attractive price point.

Main grape varieties and flavors

According to strict appellation rules, only two grape varieties are permitted to be grown here:

What dishes pair well with these wines?

Because of their freshness and brilliant acidity, Menetou-Salon wines are classic gastronomic partners. The white Sauvignon Blanc is traditionally considered one of the ultimate pairings for goat cheese (especially the local Crottin de Chavignol). It also perfectly complements fresh seafood, oysters, asparagus dishes, or white fish. The red Pinot Noir is a fantastic match for roasted poultry, veal, or traditional French pâtés.

How does Menetou-Salon differ from Sancerre?

Fundamentally, both regions produce very similarly styled wines from the same grapes. However, the terrain of Menetou-Salon is slightly flatter, meaning the wines often reveal a slightly rounder, more fruit-forward character and become approachable earlier than some of the very strict, highly age-worthy Sancerre wines.

Can Menetou-Salon wine age in the cellar?

The white Sauvignon Blanc wines showcase their crispness best when drunk young—within the first 2 to 4 years after the harvest. However, the red Pinot Noir from top producers can successfully mature in the bottle for 5 to 7 years, developing earthy and forest floor nuances.

How should this wine be served?

Serve white Menetou-Salon well chilled, at around 8–10 °C (46–50 °F), to highlight its refreshing acidity. For the red Loire Valley Pinot Noir, a slightly warmer temperature of 14–15 °C (57–59 °F) is ideal.
