Unlike the hot, drought-stricken inland territories of Sicily, the Menfi DOC region enjoys an exceptional geographical position. Vineyards stretch across hills rolling directly down to the Mediterranean Sea. Cool sea breezes constantly refresh the vines, while significant diurnal temperature shifts help preserve the grapes' natural acidity and vibrant aromas. The highly diverse soil (ranging from limestone to sand) allows for finding the perfect spot for each grape variety.
This region is famous for its openness to innovation. It is within the Menfi appellation (largely thanks to the famous Planeta estate) that Sicily proved to the world it could grow much more than just Nero d'Avola.
Due to the variety of styles, Menfi wines are extremely versatile in the kitchen. We recommend serving white Inzolia or Chardonnay with fresh seafood, rich fish, and creamy pasta dishes. The rich red wines (Syrah, Nero d'Avola) pair ideally with fire-grilled beef, gourmet burgers, aged cheeses, and spicy snacks.
In the 1980s and 90s, local winemakers began experimenting to demonstrate that Sicily's terroir was of high enough quality for international varieties. The results exceeded expectations—the warm climate and sea breezes allowed for the creation of top-tier Chardonnay and Syrah, which are now considered calling cards of the region alongside native grapes.
Most of the white wines are meant to be consumed within the first 2–3 years. However, oak-aged Chardonnay and robust red Syrah wines can successfully evolve in the bottle for 5 to 8 years.
Serve the white Menfi wines well chilled at 8–10 °C (46–50 °F). The red wines are best served at 16–18 °C (60–64 °F). If the red wine is young and highly concentrated, a brief decanting is beneficial.
