The Powerful Red Star of Abruzzo

The landscape of the Abruzzo region, featuring high mountains and the Adriatic coast, creates the perfect environment for the late-ripening Montepulciano grapes. This red wine is famous for its deep color, round and pleasant tannins, and relatively low acidity, making it highly appealing to a broad range of palates. Premium Riserva category wines are additionally aged in oak barrels, thereby acquiring notes of vanilla, cocoa, and tobacco.

The Perfect Food Companion

Because of its full body and juicy berry character, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is indispensable with serious meat dishes. It is the perfect wine for meat, especially roasted lamb, traditional meatballs (polpette), beef stews, a hearty slice of lasagna, or barbecue ribs. Due to this versatility, it is a highly favored Italian wine for family dinners and celebrations.

Is Montepulciano d’Abruzzo the same as Vino Nobile di Montepulciano?
No, this is one of the most common mistakes! Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is a wine made in the Abruzzo region from the Montepulciano grape variety. Meanwhile, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is a wine from the Tuscany region (from the town of Montepulciano), made from the Sangiovese grape.

Can this wine be cellared for a long time?
Basic wines are best drunk young (within 2–4 years). However, high-quality, oak-aged Riserva level wines from old vines possess excellent potential and can gracefully age in a cellar for 10 or even more years.

Does it need to be decanted before serving?
A young, basic wine simply needs to be opened. However, if you are tasting a more mature, higher-end Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, it is recommended to decant it for about 1 hour to allow the complex spicy and chocolate aromas to emerge.
