The Maremma terroir: sea, sun, and Sangiovese

The surroundings of the town of Scansano in southwestern Tuscany are quite different from the hilly Chianti region. Here, on the Maremma coast, the Morellino di Scansano DOCG vineyards are constantly caressed by warm Mediterranean breezes. This maritime microclimate and long, hot summers allow the Sangiovese grapes to ripen perfectly, shedding sharp acidity and developing exceptionally round, silky tannins. According to DOCG rules, the wine must contain at least 85% Sangiovese, often complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, or Syrah. In the glass, it reveals bright aromas of black cherries, blackberries, plums, and sweet spices.

Gastronomic flexibility

Unlike powerful Tuscan wines that require extensive aging, Morellino di Scansano is open and fruit-forward from its youth. Thanks to its juicy character and round tannins, it is incredibly food-friendly. Discover the best pairings with:

How does Morellino di Scansano differ from Chianti?

Although both wines are based on Sangiovese, the sunnier and warmer Maremma climate means that Morellino is typically fuller-bodied, lower in acidity, and has significantly softer, sweeter tannins than Chianti. It is a wine full of ripe fruit and warmth.

What does "Riserva" mean on the label of this wine?

Basic Morellino di Scansano wines are often released to the market as early as the spring following the harvest, showcasing maximum freshness. Meanwhile, Riserva category wines must be aged for a minimum of two years (with at least one year in wooden barrels). These wines become much more complex, acquire notes of vanilla and spice, and can successfully age in the cellar for 5–8 years.

At what temperature should it be served?

Young and fruity Morellino di Scansano is best served slightly chilled (around 16 °C / 61 °F) to highlight its berry freshness. Aged Riserva wines should be served at the standard 18 °C (64 °F).
