The Morgon appellation is the second largest Cru in the Beaujolais region. The secret to its success lies in the unique soils, particularly on the famous Côte du Py slope, which is rich in granite, schist, and volcanic rock. Because of these conditions, the Gamay grapes here yield a darker, richer, and more structured red wine. Locals even have a specific verb—"morgonner"—which describes the evolution of the wine as it ages and begins to resemble a noble Pinot Noir from Burgundy.
Thanks to its fuller body, dark berry notes, and spicy aromas, Morgon AOC is the ultimate wine for meat. It pairs remarkably well with beef stews (such as Boeuf Bourguignon), grilled pork, game dishes, and aromatic French cheeses. It is a beverage that can easily stand up to intense and rich flavors on your plate.
How long can Morgon wine be cellared?
Among all Beaujolais wines, Morgon possesses one of the greatest aging potentials. High-quality vintages can evolve beautifully in a cellar for 5 to 10 years or more, developing fascinating notes of forest floor, mushrooms, and dark cherries.
Should this wine be decanted?
If you are opening a young Morgon (1 to 3 years old), it is recommended to pour it into a decanter for about 30 to 60 minutes before drinking. This helps its earthy aromas emerge and softens its structure.
Which grapes are used in the production of this wine?
Like all red wines from the Beaujolais region, Morgon AOC is crafted exclusively from 100% Gamay grapes.
