History and styles of Moscadello di Montalcino

Although the Montalcino region is globally recognized today for the red Brunello, historically this part of Tuscany was most famous for the sweet Moscadello di Montalcino DOC wines. During the Renaissance, this wine was considered a symbol of luxury, praised by poets and served at aristocratic banquets. Crafted from Moscato Bianco grapes, this wine can officially be produced in three distinct styles:

Secrets of food pairing

Due to the excellent balance of sweetness and acidity, these Italian wines open up broad gastronomic possibilities. The light Frizzante style is perfect with fruit salads or light strawberry desserts. Late-harvest (Vendemmia Tardiva) wines require a more substantial accompaniment:

Is Moscadello di Montalcino always sweet?

Yes, according to appellation rules, this wine retains natural residual sugar and is characterized by its sweetness; however, the acidity ensures it does not become overly cloying or heavy.

How long can this wine be stored?

Tranquillo and Frizzante style wines are best consumed young—within the first 1 to 2 years—while they are bursting with fresh floral aromas. Meanwhile, late-harvest (Vendemmia Tardiva) wines can successfully age in the bottle for 5 to 10 years due to their high sugar concentration.

How should it be served correctly?

All styles of Moscadello wines must be served well chilled. The ideal temperature is 8–10 °C (46–50 °F) to allow the crisp acidity and elegant aromas to unfold.
