Muscat de Beaumes de Venise

1–0 of 0

Muscat de Beaumes de Venise is one of the most famous naturally sweet (Vin Doux Naturel) white wines from France's Rhône Valley (Vallée du Rhône). Crafted exclusively from Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains grapes, this elegant dessert beverage captivates with intense aromas of honey, apricot, and orange blossoms. Unlike many sweet wines, it retains an excellent freshness, making it ideal both as an aperitif and alongside exceptional desserts.

How is the sweetness of this wine achieved?

The production process of Muscat de Beaumes de Venise is unique and is known as mutage. The grapes are harvested very late when they have naturally accumulated a massive amount of sugar. During fermentation, before the yeast can convert all the sugar into alcohol, pure grape spirit is added to the wine. This action halts fermentation, allowing the natural grape sweetness to remain while raising the overall alcohol volume to around 15%. The result is an incredibly aromatic, sweet wine that still maintains a refreshing acidity.

Gastronomic pairings with dessert Muscat

This sweet Rhône Valley wine is highly versatile. While it serves perfectly in place of dessert, the French often serve it at the very beginning of a meal as well. The best flavor pairings include:

How long can Muscat de Beaumes de Venise be cellared?

While the high sugar and alcohol content ensures the wine will not spoil quickly, it is crafted to highlight fresh, floral, and fruity aromas. Therefore, it is best enjoyed young—within the first 3 to 5 years after release. Extended aging will replace the fresh aromas with notes of dried fruit and caramel.

How should this wine be served correctly?

To prevent the sweetness from overpowering its freshness, this dessert wine must be served well chilled. The ideal temperature is 8–10 °C (46–50 °F). Serve it in slightly smaller, narrower glasses.

Are only sweet wines produced in the Beaumes de Venise appellation?

The Muscat de Beaumes de Venise appellation produces exclusively sweet Muscat wines. However, the same geographical zone is home to another appellation—Beaumes de Venise AOC—which produces rich, dry red wines made from Grenache and Syrah grapes.
