Niagara-on-the-Lake VQA is one of Ontario’s official wine-growing areas, located in the eastern part of the Niagara Peninsula, between Lake Ontario and the Niagara River. The area is divided into four sub-appellations: Four Mile Creek, Niagara River, Niagara Lakeshore and Niagara-on-the-Lake.
The region’s climate is strongly influenced by Lake Ontario. The lake moderates winter cold and summer heat, reduces the risk of spring and autumn frosts, and helps create a long growing season. The warm, relatively long autumn is particularly important for late-ripening varieties such as 'Cabernet Franc' and 'Riesling'.

Niagara-on-the-Lake is characterised by relatively flat or gently rolling terrain, with soils formed largely from glacial and lacustrine deposits. Clay, sand, silt and gravel can be found across different sites, creating significant differences in drainage and grape-ripening conditions.
The region grows both international and cool-climate grape varieties. Particularly important are 'Riesling', 'Chardonnay', 'Pinot Noir', 'Cabernet Franc' and 'Merlot'. Warmer conditions than in some other parts of Ontario allow good fruit ripeness, while the influence of Lake Ontario helps preserve acidity and freshness. Niagara-on-the-Lake is also an important area for Icewine production, particularly from 'Vidal' and 'Riesling'.
