Nizza DOCG – the pinnacle of the Barbera grape

Until 2014, Nizza was merely a subzone of Barbera d'Asti. However, due to its exceptionally favorable microclimate and outstanding wine quality, it was granted its own, highest DOCG status. The wines here are crafted from 100% Barbera grapes grown on strictly selected, sunniest slopes across 18 specific villages. Yields are heavily restricted, ensuring the wines stand out with incredible intensity and concentration.

Wine character and aging requirements

Nizza appellation rules mandate that the wine must be aged for a minimum of 18 months before release (with at least 6 months spent in oak barrels). The Riserva version requires a full 30 months of aging (12 months in oak). In the glass, this beverage reveals a deep ruby color that transitions to garnet. The aroma is dominated by dark cherries, plums, and licorice, while the oak influence introduces notes of dark chocolate, vanilla, and sweet spices. The palate presents the fresh acidity characteristic of the Barbera variety, yet the tannins remain round and remarkably soft.

Why choose Nizza over a standard Barbera d'Asti?

Nizza DOCG represents the absolute peak of quality. Due to stricter geographical boundaries, lower yields, and mandatory extended oak aging, Nizza will always be a more concentrated, complex, and age-worthy wine than a basic Barbera d'Asti, which is typically lighter and geared towards early consumption.

How long can this wine be kept in the cellar?

Thanks to its strong acidity and powerful extract, Nizza wines are built for longevity. A collectible wine from a good vintage in this appellation can successfully evolve in the bottle for 10–15 years. Before serving a mature bottle, a brief decanting is highly recommended.
