How is Pineau des Charentes Made?

The production process of this drink is strictly regulated and steeped in local tradition. It is crafted by mixing freshly pressed, unfermented grape must with Cognac eau-de-vie that has been aged for at least one year. By halting the fermentation process, the beverage retains the grapes' natural sweetness, while the Cognac adds structure and longevity. Pineau des Charentes is then aged in oak barrels to develop its complex flavors.

Food Pairing Suggestions

Pineau des Charentes is traditionally served chilled as a festive aperitif. It also pairs beautifully with pâtés (especially foie gras), fresh melon, blue cheeses, and various fruit-based desserts. Presented in a beautiful bottle, it makes a solid and rare gift for any connoisseur.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what temperature should Pineau des Charentes be served?

It is best served well chilled, between 8–10 °C (46–50 °F). For maximum refreshment during the summer, it can also be served over ice.

How long does an open bottle last?

Thanks to the added alcohol (typically reaching 16–22% ABV) and natural residual sugar, an opened bottle kept in the refrigerator will maintain its best qualities for several weeks, unlike standard unfortified wine.
