1–0 of 0

Rosso di Montepulciano DOC is an elegant, fruit-forward, and crisp Tuscan red wine, often affectionately called the younger sibling of the famous Vino Nobile. Crafted from the native Sangiovese clone (locally known as Prugnolo Gentile), this wine delights with bright red berry aromas and refreshing acidity. It is an excellent, unpretentious choice for the everyday Italian table and fun gatherings with friends.

Rosso di Montepulciano style and production

The surroundings of the town of Montepulciano in southern Tuscany (the heart of Tuscan wines) feature sandy clay soils that impart elegance to the wines. Unlike Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, which requires extended aging, the Rosso di Montepulciano DOC appellation was designed for earlier consumption. The grapes for this wine are often harvested from younger vines, and the wine itself is aged for a much shorter period—frequently just in stainless steel tanks or very briefly in oak barrels. As a result, the glass is dominated not by heavy oak or leather aromas, but by pure fruitiness: fresh cherries, raspberries, strawberries, and subtle floral (violet) notes.

A perfect gastronomic chameleon

Thanks to its medium body, soft tannins, and highly refreshing acidity, Rosso di Montepulciano is one of the most flexible food companions. It never overpowers the flavors of a dish, making it an ideal pairing for:

How does Rosso di Montepulciano differ from Vino Nobile di Montepulciano?

Both wines originate from the same zone and are pressed from the same grapes (predominantly Sangiovese). Vino Nobile is a wine that undergoes strict and extended (at least 2 years) oak aging, intended for long-term cellaring. Rosso is a younger, lighter, and more open wine requiring much shorter aging. It is a more everyday, refreshing wine offering an excellent Tuscan price-to-quality ratio.

Does this wine need to be aged in the bottle?

No. This is a wine best enjoyed young. Its greatest asset is its crisp fruitiness, which is best experienced within the first 2 to 4 years after the harvest.

At what temperature should it be served?

Since it is a lighter-style, refreshing red wine, we recommend serving it slightly chilled—at around 15–16 °C (59–61 °F). Decanting is not necessary; simply pour it into a tulip-shaped glass and enjoy.
