The Harmony of Steep Slopes and Syrah

The Saint-Joseph appellation stretches along the right bank of the Rhône River, where vineyards grow on steep granite terraces. The 100% Syrah red wine produced here features aromas of dark blackberries, black olives, wild meat, and smoke. Compared to its powerful neighbors like Hermitage or Cornas, Saint-Joseph is slightly more open, exhibiting softer tannins and exceptional fruitiness in its youth.

What to Pair with Saint-Joseph Wines?

The white wines from this region are perfect with richer poultry, cheeses, or creamy dishes. Meanwhile, the reds serve as the ultimate, expressive wine for meat. Its peppery nature and firm structure pair flawlessly with grilled lamb, beef steaks in black peppercorn sauce, and game. It is a classic that reflects the true character of French wine.

What is the aging potential of Saint-Joseph red wines?
Most of these wines are excellent to drink 3 to 5 years after the vintage, but top producers (especially from the historic core villages of the appellation) create wines that can age beautifully for 10 to 15 years in a cellar, developing notes of leather and licorice.

Are rosé wines produced in this appellation?
No, Saint-Joseph AOP regulations only permit the production of red (Syrah) and white (Marsanne/Roussanne) wines.

At what temperature should it be served?
Red wines are best served at around 16–17 °C so that the peppery and smoky aromas can unfold without being weighed down by alcohol. Decanting for at least 1 hour is highly recommended for younger wines.
