Read moreThe Salento peninsula is surrounded by the sea (the Adriatic and the Ionian) on three sides, which plays a critical role in local winemaking. While summer days scorch the earth, sea breezes cool the vineyards at night, allowing the grapes to ripen evenly. The traditional red wine of this region delights with a full body, low acidity, soft tannins, and intense aromas of dried plums, blackberries, tobacco, and dark chocolate.
Due to their sunny character and sweet spice notes, Salento wines are incredibly food-friendly. It is an ideal, robust wine for meat, perfectly complementing spicy barbecue dishes, roasted ribs, meat-loaded pizzas, and pasta with rich ragù sauces. This versatile and easy-to-understand Italian wine will effortlessly become the favorite beverage at your parties.
What characterizes the Negroamaro grape grown in the Salento region?
Negroamaro translates to "black and bitter." It gives the wine an extremely dark, almost inky color, an abundance of black fruit aromas, and a very subtle, pleasantly bitter finish (reminiscent of almonds or dark chocolate), which perfectly balances the jammy sweetness.
Are rosé wines produced in the Salento IGT zone?
Yes! The Salento peninsula is one of Italy's best and most famous regions for rosé wines (Rosato). Crafted from the same Negroamaro grapes, they yield a darker pink hue, are highly fruit-forward, structured, and incredibly gastronomic rosés.
At what temperature should these red wines be served?
Although this is a warm-climate, higher-alcohol wine, serving it too warm (room temperature) would be a mistake, as the alcohol will become too prominent. It is best served slightly chilled, at a temperature of 16–18 °C.
