While this zone is world-renowned for Brunello wines (which must be 100% Sangiovese), Sant' Antimo rules are much more flexible. Here, you will find both complex red wine crafted from Bordeaux blends and expressive white wine made from Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc. This allows producers to craft more contemporary, full-bodied, and fruit-forward wines that reflect the best qualities of Tuscany.
Due to the wide spectrum of styles produced, these wines are incredibly versatile. White Sant' Antimo wines pair wonderfully with poultry, creamy pasta dishes, and fish. The reds, characterized by a firmer structure and dark berry aromas, are the perfect wine for meat, especially roast beef, game stews, and aged cheeses.
Are Sant' Antimo wines suitable for long-term aging?
Red wines based on Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot possess excellent aging potential. Under proper cellar conditions, they can successfully evolve for 5 to 10 years. White wines are generally meant to be enjoyed younger, within their first 2 to 4 years.
How does this appellation differ from Rosso di Montalcino?
Rosso di Montalcino must be made exclusively from the native Sangiovese grape, whereas Sant' Antimo DOC permits the use of international varieties or blends with Sangiovese, giving the wines a completely different, more modern profile.
What serving temperature best reveals the flavor?
Serve the white wines chilled to 10–12 °C, and the rich red wines at around 16–18 °C to allow their spicy and berry aromas to fully emerge.
