Features of the Sant'Antimo Region

This appellation was created in 1996 to grant Montalcino winemakers more creative freedom. Although the region is globally renowned for Brunello wines made from Sangiovese grapes, the Sant'Antimo DOC regulations permit the use of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, as well as white varieties like Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc. These are wines that reflect the "Super Tuscan" concept, intertwining the Italian terroir with an international style.

Food Pairing Suggestions

The rich red Sant'Antimo DOC wines are an excellent choice for meat dishes. They pair wonderfully with grilled beef, game, hearty pasta dishes, and truffles. The white wines will perfectly complement fish, seafood, or poultry. During a gathering, these wines are beautifully accompanied by various Italian hard cheeses and traditional wine snacks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Sant'Antimo wines be aged?

Yes, the red wines from this appellation, especially those based on Cabernet Sauvignon or Syrah, mature exceptionally well in oak barrels and can evolve elegantly in the cellar for 5 to 10 years.

How does Sant'Antimo differ from Rosso di Montalcino?

Rosso di Montalcino must be produced from 100% Sangiovese grapes, whereas Sant'Antimo DOC permits the use of a wide spectrum of international and indigenous grape varieties, resulting in "international" wines with a completely different flavor profile.
