St-Estèphe AOC Terroir and Grape Blends
St-Estèphe is the northernmost of the four most famous Haut-Médoc appellations. Its soils contain a significantly higher proportion of clay compared to its southern neighbors (Pauillac or St-Julien). This clay excellently retains moisture during hot and dry vintages. As a result, Merlot grapes make up a larger share here than in other Left Bank appellations, adding roundness to the wine, although Cabernet Sauvignon continues to play the leading role in the blends. The wines stand out with a deep dark color, firm tannins, earthy and tobacco aromas, and tremendous aging potential in the bottle.
