The "Barolo of the South" and Volcanic Terroir

The Taurasi appellation is located in the Irpinia hills, where the soil is enriched with volcanic ash (due to the nearby Mount Vesuvius) and limestone. Because of the high-altitude climate, the grapes ripen very slowly and are harvested late, often well into November. This gives the red wine an impressive structure, vibrant acidity, and complexity. Before being released to the market, this wine must be aged for a minimum of three years (including at least one year in wooden barrels).

Perfect Harmony with Hearty Dishes

Due to its pronounced tannic structure and full body, Taurasi demands protein-rich food. It is the ideal wine for meat, pairing flawlessly with roasted lamb, beef steaks, game stews, and hard, long-aged cheeses. It also makes a highly substantial and valuable wine gift for serious collectors of Italian wines.

How long can Taurasi DOCG wine be cellared?
This is one of the most age-worthy wines in Italy. The best examples of Taurasi can successfully evolve in a cellar for 10, 20, or even more years, developing silky tannins and notes of dried plums, tobacco, and truffles over time.

Is it necessary to decant this wine?
Yes, especially if you are opening a bottle younger than 8–10 years. Taurasi's tannins are very austere in their youth, so it is highly recommended to decant the wine for at least 2 hours before tasting to allow it to soften and open its aromatic bouquet.

How does Taurasi "Riserva" differ from regular Taurasi?
A "Riserva" category wine must be aged for a minimum of four years (including at least 18 months in oak barrels) and is typically produced only in the best vintage years.
