What makes the Toscana IGP appellation stand out?

In Italy, the IGT/IGP (Protected Geographical Indication) status is often perceived as a step below DOC or DOCG, but different rules apply in Tuscany. The Toscana IGP appellation was born out of rebellion against strict traditional regulations, especially in the Chianti zone. Winemakers wanted to create premium wines without being forced to use only native grapes or adhere to specific aging periods. Today, this appellation guarantees creative freedom: traditional Sangiovese grapes are blended with international varieties, or 100% French-varietal wines are crafted from Tuscany's best vineyards.

Legendary "Super Tuscans" and other styles

The Toscana IGP portfolio is incredibly vast, but its most prominent calling card is the "Super Tuscans." These are extremely powerful, complex red wines, typically aged in French oak barrels. They are based on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, or Cabernet Franc, often blended with Sangiovese. In the glass, they reveal a deep ruby color and aromas of blackcurrants, cherries, tobacco, vanilla, and leather.

While red wines dominate, the appellation also offers excellent, full-bodied white wines (mostly from Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc), which smell of tropical fruits and feature a creamy texture.

Food pairing guidelines

Due to their firm structure and powerful tannins, Super Tuscans are true champions of meat dishes. They show their absolute best when paired with:

Can Toscana IGP wines be cellared for a long time?

Yes, top-tier red Toscana IGP wines (especially those based on Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot) are built for longevity. Such a collectible wine can successfully evolve in the cellar for 10, 20, or even 30 years, revealing incredible aromatic complexity.

Should these wines be decanted?

Decanting is highly recommended for young, powerful, oak-aged red Toscana IGP wines. Pouring the wine into a decanter for at least 1–2 hours before serving will soften the tannins and allow the berry and spice aromas to fully emerge.

Are Toscana IGP wines always expensive?

While some of Italy's most expensive wines belong to this appellation, the IGP status is very broad. You can also find excellent, affordable wines meant for the everyday table, demonstrating a superb Tuscan price-to-quality ratio.

If you want to explore a bolder, more modern side of Italy, choose a Toscana IGP wine based on grape variety or occasion. And if you are unsure, contact our experts—we will help you find the perfect bottle for your dinner.
