A Character Shaped by the Mountains

While most Verdicchio grapes are grown closer to the Adriatic Sea, the Matelica appellation is unique because it is entirely enclosed by the Apennine Mountains. This secluded valley experiences significant temperature variations between day and night, leading to a slower ripening process. As a result, winemakers produce a highly concentrated, complex white wine with aromas of apples, white flowers, and wild herbs, finishing with the variety's signature hint of bitter almond.

What Food to Pair It With?

Due to its firm acidity and pronounced minerality, Verdicchio di Matelica is a phenomenal food companion. It pairs wonderfully with seafood, grilled fish, clams, and various vegetarian dishes (especially those featuring zucchini or asparagus), as well as fresh cheeses. It is a versatile Italian wine that works perfectly as an aperitif or alongside the main course.

Is Verdicchio suitable for cellaring?
Absolutely. Thanks to its naturally high acidity and powerful structure, the best Matelica wines can age beautifully for 5 to 10 years. Over time, they develop intriguing notes of honey, beeswax, and toasted nuts.

How does Matelica differ from Castelli di Jesi?
Matelica wines are generally sharper, more mineral-driven, and structurally firmer due to the mountain climate. In contrast, Castelli di Jesi wines tend to have a rounder body and a slightly more pronounced fruitiness.

What is the ideal serving temperature?
A young Verdicchio is best served chilled at 10–12 °C. If you are tasting an aged (Riserva) version, serving it slightly warmer (around 12–14 °C) will help fully release its complex aromatic profile.
