Read moreThis appellation requires paying attention to the vineyard ("Climat") names, as each of the 34 vineyards with "Premier Cru" status imparts a unique character to the wine.
If you are looking for maximum elegance and perfumed aromas, look for wines from vineyards like "Les Caillerets" or "Clos des Chênes". Meanwhile, vineyards closer to the village of Meursault (e.g., "Les Santenots") yield slightly darker, fuller-bodied wines that require longer aging.
Due to its exceptional smoothness and elegance, Volnay 1er Cru should not be overpowered by heavy or spicy dishes. It is ideally paired with roasted duck breast, quail, wild mushroom dishes (especially chanterelles), and milder French cheeses such as Reblochon.
Although both villages are right next to each other and produce wine from the same Pinot Noir grape, their soils differ. Volnay has more limestone, resulting in lighter, more floral wines with soft tannins. Pommard's soil contains more clay and iron, making the wines darker, firmer, and requiring more aging.
"1er Cru" (or "Premier Cru") denotes a high level in the Burgundy vineyard classification. It means the wine is made from specifically selected slopes that historically demonstrate the best characteristics, subject to stricter yield limits than basic village ("Village") wines.
