The Kingdom of Spanish Monastrell Grapes

The Yecla appellation is situated on a high plateau characterized by hot days and cool nights. This climate, combined with limestone soils, allows the late-ripening Monastrell (known as Mourvèdre in France) to achieve perfect balance. The resulting red wine features a very dark color, full body, and rich aromas of ripe blackberries, plums, black pepper, and earthy undertones. Often, these grapes are blended with Syrah or Cabernet Sauvignon to add even more complexity to the wine.

The Perfect Companion for Hearty Food and BBQ

Thanks to its robust structure and round tannins, this Spanish wine is indispensable when served with rich, hearty food. It pairs wonderfully with grilled meats, spicy meat stews, lamb, and traditional Spanish sausages (Chorizo). It is a fantastic choice for an outdoor barbecue or a cozy dinner with friends.

Are Yecla wines suitable for cellaring?
Basic wines (Joven) are meant to be drunk young to enjoy their fruitiness. However, oak-aged wines at the Crianza or Reserva levels can evolve beautifully in the bottle for 4 to 8 years.

At what temperature is it best to serve this wine?
Because these wines typically have higher alcohol content and a full body, it is recommended to serve them slightly cooler—at around 16–18 °C. If served too warm, the alcohol may become overpowering.

Does this appellation produce only red wines?
While Monastrell red wines account for the vast majority of production, the Yecla zone also produces small quantities of very refreshing rosé wines and white wines made from Macabeo and Chardonnay grapes.
