Chateau de Fargues Lur Saluces Sauternes 2005

Description

A Sauternes wine crafted by the legendary Lur Saluces family, whose name has been associated with Château d'Yquem for centuries. Château de Fargues is often referred to as the “spiritual brother of Yquem”, as its philosophy is built on the same principles: extremely rigorous grape selection, low yields, and exceptional longevity.

The bouquet reveals aromas of orange marmalade, mandarins, peach preserve, pineapple paste, apricots, and acacia honey. Extended ageing brings additional layers of beeswax, toasted almonds, coconut, burnt sugar, marzipan, and subtle spice notes.

On the palate, the wine is rich and almost velvety in texture, yet remarkably vibrant. Concentrated flavours of exotic fruits, candied orange peel, honey, and dried apricots are balanced by refreshing acidity, which provides harmony and prevents the sweetness from becoming overwhelming. The finish is exceptionally long, layered, and refined, showcasing the distinctive class of a great Sauternes.

The wine is produced primarily from ‘Sémillon’ with a smaller proportion of ‘Sauvignon Blanc’, affected by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea). The 2005 vintage was harvested in five separate passes between late September and late October, selecting only perfectly botrytised berries. Thanks to the outstanding quality of the vintage, almost the entire harvest was allocated to the grand vin of Château de Fargues. The residual sugar level reached approximately 142 g/L.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 10–12 °C with desserts, fruit platters, mild aged cheeses, oysters, tuna tartare, and roasted chicken with garlic.

This is so creamy, almost milky in feel, with toasted coconut and cashew notes giving way to sweet peach, apricot and glazed pear flavors that glide along, while ginger, green tea, lychee and kumquat flavors extend through the finish. Shows terrific range and definition. Feels like it's just starting to open, and is in no rush. Drink now through 2035. 2,665 cases made.

About brand

Château de Fargues is one of the oldest and most noble estates in the Sauternes region, with a history dating back to the 13th century. However, its true rise began in the 18th century, when the Lur-Saluces family, through marriage, took control of both Château d’Yquem and Château de Fargues, becoming inseparable from the identity and prestige of Sauternes.

It was this family that established the legendary practice of noble rot (Botrytis cinerea) — an extremely selective, entirely hand-harvested process that allows the creation of sweet wines with extraordinary aromatic complexity, concentration, and vibrant acidity. This approach later became the quality benchmark for the entire region.

For more than three decades, Alexandre de Lur-Saluces, long-time head of Château d’Yquem, strengthened the family’s global reputation. After the sale of Yquem to the LVMH Group, the family retained Château de Fargues, which today is led by Philippe de Lur-Saluces, the sixteenth generation of the family.

The philosophy of Château de Fargues remains unchanged:

  • organic viticulture,
  • strict hand selection of grapes,
  • low yields and long aging,
  • absolute respect for terroir.

Today, Château de Fargues produces some of the most elegant Sauternes wines, known for their purity, vibrant acidity, and exceptional aging potential. These wines prove that Sauternes is not merely a dessert wine style, but a complex, gastronomic expression, capable of pairing beautifully with seafood, savory dishes, and refined cuisine.
