Red dry
Saint-Joseph AOC is one of the most noble appellations of the Northern Rhône, where ‘Syrah’ reveals its purest and most elegant expression.
The wine opens with rich aromas of blackberries, black plums, and blueberries, followed by subtle notes of wild herbs, black pepper, and red flowers. Hints of smoke, soft tobacco, and granite minerality gradually emerge, adding depth and complexity.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and structured, yet refined and poised. The tannins are silky and well-polished, providing a smooth texture, while the acidity remains vibrant and well-balanced. Flavors are driven by ripe dark fruits — blackberry and plum — supported by spicy nuances, light smokiness, and a distinctly mineral, slightly earthy backbone. The finish is long, elegant, and layered with red fruit and herbal notes.
The vineyards are located on east-facing granite slopes, typical of the Saint-Joseph appellation. The granite soils contribute structure, minerality, and precision, while the cooler exposure helps preserve freshness and acidity.
The wine is made from 100% ‘Sérine’ (a traditional Syrah clone). Approximately 70% of the grapes are destemmed, while 30% are fermented as whole clusters, using native yeasts to enhance aromatic complexity and spice. Ageing takes place in 20% new French oak barrels, with the remainder in used barrels, allowing the wine to develop structure while preserving purity and elegance.
Serve at 16–18 °C, with grilled duck, stewed mushrooms, or a stew of black lentils and herbs.
Château de Saint Cosme is one of the oldest and most respected wineries in the southern Rhône Valley, located in the Gigondas appellation. The estate’s history dates back to the 16th century, and today it is run by Louis Barruol, representing the 14th generation of the family dedicated to preserving and developing this exceptional domaine.
The winery is renowned for its organic and biodynamic viticulture and for its highly precise work in the cellar. The vineyards grow on limestone, clay, and sandy soils, which give the wines structure, mineral tension, and remarkable ageing potential.
The estate’s flagship grape variety is ‘Grenache’, alongside ‘Syrah’, ‘Mourvèdre’, and ‘Cinsault’. Grapes are harvested by hand, fermentation is carried out with native yeasts, and ageing often takes place in old oak barrels or concrete vats to preserve the purity of the terroir and the authenticity of the wine.
Château de Saint Cosme wines are known for:
expressive yet balanced fruit character
elegant structure
pronounced minerality
excellent ageing potential
The estate is widely regarded as a benchmark of Gigondas, respected both in France and internationally as one of the most authentic expressions of the Southern Rhône.
