Description

James Suckling

So much class in the nose with a sophisticated kaleidoscope of dark fruit such as blackcurrants, and spices such as salt and pepper, as well as cloves and nutmeg. Full-bodied. Compacted and dense yet weightless. It opens beautifully. The tannins go on and on with wonderful presence. Salty undertones.

About brand

Château Palmer is one of the most distinguished wine estates of the Margaux appellation in the Bordeaux region, classified as a Troisième Grand Cru Classé in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification – a position that its wines have surpassed for decades in both reputation and quality. The estate occupies an exceptional location in the Margaux and Cantenac area, and its wines are among the most highly regarded representatives of classic Bordeaux tradition.

The history of the estate begins in the early 18th century, but its current name and vision took shape in 1814, when Major Charles Palmer purchased the land and began developing his own vineyards, expanding them to more than 160 hectares, uniting plots in Margaux, Issan, and Cantenac. Ownership later changed, but since 1938 the estate has been managed by the Sichel and Mähler-Besse families, who helped establish it among the finest Grand Cru properties of Bordeaux.

Today the vineyards cover around 55 hectares, planted with classic Bordeaux red varieties: ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ and ‘Merlot’ generally form the core of the blend, while a small proportion of ‘Petit Verdot’ is added to provide aromatic complexity and structure. This combination of varieties, together with hillside gravel and limestone terroir near the Gironde estuary, allows the wines to express the elegance and depth of the Margaux appellation.

Château Palmer produces several wines: the flagship Château Palmer, Alter Ego de Palmer – a wine made from the same high-quality terroir plots with a different production philosophy and earlier accessibility, Vin Blanc de Palmer – a white wine, and occasionally a special release, Historical XIXth Century Wine, recreating a historic Bordeaux tradition. The estate has also transitioned to biodynamic practices in order to further express the nuances of its terroir.

Château Palmer wines are characterized by a rich aromatic palette, balanced texture, refined tannins, and ageing potential; these are wines capable of maturing for decades and consistently earning recognition from both
