White dry

Chateau Picque Caillou Pessac-Leognan 2022

36,00 €

Description

A dry white “Pessac-Léognan” wine in which the aromatic intensity of ‘Sauvignon Blanc’ combines with freshness, a rich texture and the minerality characteristic of the gravelly soils of Graves. The 2022 vintage is marked by expressive fruit, lively acidity and a subtle influence of oak.

The nose reveals grapefruit, lime and white fruit, complemented by notes of boxwood, jasmine, fresh herbs and a hint of smoke. Subtle nuances of vanilla and spice emerge in the glass, adding further complexity to the aromatic profile.

The palate is rich and textured, yet retains energy and freshness. Citrus and green apple notes are complemented by hints of tropical fruit and oak. Lively acidity lends precision, while the finish leaves lingering impressions of citrus, smoke and minerality.

The “Château Picque Caillou” vineyards are planted on the gravel and sandy-gravel soils characteristic of Graves, which provide good drainage and favourable conditions for vine growth. The 2022 white wine is made from ‘Sauvignon Blanc’ (70%) and ‘Sémillon’ (30%). The grapes are hand-harvested, and fermentation takes place in oak barrels. The wine is aged for around seven months in French oak barrels, approximately a quarter of which are new.

Serving recommendations

Serving temperature: 10–12 °C. This wine pairs well with scallops in lemon butter sauce, pan-seared sole with fresh herbs, or chicken with asparagus and a light sour cream sauce.

James Suckling

There is a lactic note on the nose, with hints of goat cheese and smoke that don’t dominate. Olives, currants and black cherries as well. Structured and quite chewy on the palate, with a medium to full body at the end. A bit austere at this stage, but should get better in two years.

Decanter

Notes of chocolate, licorice, dark berries and tobacco preface the 2022 Picque-Caillou, a medium to full-bodied, rather firm and compact wine with structured tannins, good depth at the core and a long, pencil lead-inflected finish.

About brand

Château Picque Caillou is a Bordeaux wine estate whose history and present day meet in a truly unexpected setting. It is the only still-active vineyard located within the city of Bordeaux itself, having survived urban expansion, the passage of time, and a constantly changing landscape.

The name “Picque Caillou” comes from the estate’s distinctive gravelly, stony soil, long regarded as one of the most suitable terroirs for growing high-quality grapes. These stones absorb heat during the day and slowly release it at night, allowing the grapes to ripen evenly while preserving aromatic depth and balance. This unique soil is one of the key reasons why the wines of Château Picque Caillou are known for their elegance, structure, and aging potential.

Although the estate’s roots go back several centuries, its modern identity was shaped in the late 20th century when it was taken over by the Calvet family. Their vision was to preserve the character of the place while crafting wines that express the classic Pessac-Léognan style, refined through a clean, precise, and contemporary approach to winemaking.

Great attention is paid to handwork in the vineyard, strict yield control, and the individual character of each parcel. Despite being surrounded by the city, the vineyard benefits from a unique microclimate that allows the grapes to reach optimal ripeness. This results in wines of harmony, balance, and natural depth.

Château Picque Caillou wines are defined by:

  • expressive black fruit aromas,
  • subtle spice notes,
  • elegant, well-structured tannins,
  • and a distinct mineral character typical of the Pessac-Léognan appellation.

Today, Château Picque Caillou is regarded as one of the most fascinating “urban vineyards” in the world — a rare estate that preserves Bordeaux tradition while proving that authentic, terroir-driven wine can still be created in the heart of a modern city.
