Description

A wine with a firm body, great character, and plenty of soul.

Prelius is an ancient salt lake where the Etruscans once practiced fishing and salt production. Over time, Ombrone River floods slowly filled the lake, creating the fertile soils of Maremma in Tuscany. Here, Benedictine monks founded their abbey and began cultivating vines — specifically in the Prile area, known today as Prelius, where Volpaia’s vineyards now thrive.

After 12 months of ageing in oak barrels, the best Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot barrels are selected and blended. Before release, the wine spends an additional 12 months resting in bottle.

Aromas of ripe black cherries, sage, wet leaves, and dark chocolate.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 16–18 °C with grilled meats, game stews with mushrooms or vegetables.

Ripe black cherries, sage, wet leaves, black chocolate and some baking spices to the nose. Medium to full body on the palate with a mouthful of dusty tannins that evenly spread across the palate. Juicy, medium-long finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink now.

About brand

"Castello di Volpaia" is more than just vineyards and a farm – it's the historic residence of the Della Volpaia family of Florence, a dynasty of artists and builders who once created armillary spheres and sundials. Lorenzo, a friend of Leonardo da Vinci, who created an impressive clock for Florence's Palazzo Vecchio, was a particularly prominent member.

Today, "Castello di Volpaia" belongs to the Mascheroni Stianti family, who are dedicated to ensuring that every restoration respects the original artistic heritage. Maintaining the traditions of the 11th century, the castle and the surrounding village remain closely linked to the production of high-quality wine and olive oil. The unique terroir of the Volpaia area, located in the prestigious Chianti Classico region, gives the wines their distinctive character. The winery owns 360 hectares of vineyards, which are farmed according to strict organic farming principles, emphasizing the harmony between nature and man. "Castello di Volpaia" is undoubtedly considered a super classic Italian wine producer, and almost all of their red wines are made from Tuscany's primary grape variety, ‘Sangiovese’.

Wine Style

"Castello di Volpaia" wines are characterized by elegance, structure, and excellent acid balance, reflecting the uniqueness of the Chianti Classico region and especially the Volpaia terroir. Red wines, made from ‘Sangiovese’ grapes, dominate.

  • Red wines, based on ‘Sangiovese’, offer bright aromas of cherries and plums, elegant herbal and earthy notes, firm but smooth tannins, and a long, pleasant finish. Longer aging in barrels adds complexity and spice notes.
  • The winery also produces a limited quantity of white wines and Vin Santo, but the red Chianti Classico wines are their hallmark.

Prestigious Vineyards

The "Castello di Volpaia" vineyards are located in the upper Chianti Classico zone, in the Volpaia area:

  • The altitude above sea level and the unique microclimate with significant diurnal temperature variations lead to slower grape ripening and more intense aroma development.
  • Soils dominated by limestone and clay provide the wines with elegance, minerality, and structure.
  • Organic farming principles ensure healthy soil and high-quality grape yields.

These exceptional vineyard characteristics and respect for tradition are the foundation of the quality of "Castello di Volpaia" wines.

Aging and Drinking Period

"Castello di Volpaia" red wines are aged in oak barrels and then in bottles to create a harmonious and balanced wine. While some young wines can be enjoyed immediately, the top-class Chianti Classico Riserva and other selected cuvées have excellent potential to age and develop for many years, gaining even more complexity and elegant nuances.
