Description

White wine – 100% ‘Sauvignon Blanc’

One of the most popular ‘Sauvignon Blanc’ wines from Sancerre. This wine is a true example of Loire Valley classicelegant, fresh, and full of minerality. Made from carefully selected grapes grown in the most renowned villages of Sancerre, it perfectly expresses the uniqueness of the region and the potential of ‘Sauvignon Blanc’.

The aroma reveals notes of fresh white flowers, juicy lemons, and grapefruit, intertwined with an elegant, mineral touch. The palate is lively and balanced, with crisp acidity, a vivid citrus character, and a long-lasting, fresh and clean finish.

Domaine Chatelain Sélection Sancerre 2023 is an elegant and expressive white wine, reflecting the character and terroir diversity of the famous Sancerre region. The wine is crafted from grapes grown in several prestigious vineyard sites – Verdigny, Sury-en-Vaux, and Chavignol – where limestone and clay soils dominate, giving the wine its minerality and freshness. The vines are on average 20–30 years old, ensuring grape concentration and aromatic depth.

The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature (16–18 °C).

About brand

The Chatelain family has been cultivating vines on the slopes of Pouilly-sur-Loire since 1630 – the twelfth generation is currently working on the estate. André Chatelain, who passed away in 2005, was one of the first winegrowers in the Pouilly area of the Loire to start exporting his wines and build an international reputation for his winery. These efforts were rewarded with success – Domaine Chatelain has become one of the most recognized producers in Pouilly-sur-Loire.

The grapes for the famous Pouilly-Fumé (Pouilly – the name of the place, Fumé – smoky) grow in a unique, mineral-rich soil composed of a mixture of clay and gravel, covered with limestone, flint, and calcareous tufa. It is this complex of minerals that gives the wine its characteristic smoky flavor, which is inseparable from arguably the most elegant expression of ‘Sauvignon Blanc’ in the world.

Wine Style

Domaine Chatelain wines are characterized by exceptional elegance, freshness, and minerality, typical of high-quality Pouilly-Fumé. The ‘Sauvignon Blanc’ variety dominates.

  • White wines (Pouilly-Fumé) are dry, with bright acidity, intense aromas of citrus fruits (grapefruit, lemon), green apples, and characteristic smoky, flinty notes. Extended aging on lees adds texture and complexity.

Prestigious Vineyards

Domaine Chatelain owns vineyards in the best areas of Pouilly-sur-Loire:

  • Sloping vineyards with a unique soil composition (clay, gravel, limestone, flint, calcareous tufa) contribute to the wines' minerality and aroma intensity.
  • The favorable climate of the Loire River, with mild winters and warm summers, ensures optimal grape ripening and freshness.
  • Traditional viticultural methods and meticulous work in the vineyard are essential factors in the high quality of the wines.

These unique terroir characteristics and family traditions allow Domaine Chatelain to create exceptional Pouilly-Fumé wines.

Aging and Drinking Period

Domaine Chatelain Pouilly-Fumé wines are usually meant to be enjoyed young, when their freshness and vibrant aromas are most pronounced. However, higher-end cuvées can age beautifully in the bottle for several years, gaining even more complexity and subtlety. Their elegant style and minerality make these wines easy to pair with a variety of dishes.
