What makes the Naoussa region special?

Located in the Macedonia region, Naoussa has a continental climate – characterized by cold winters and warm summers, with vineyards stretching across mountain slopes. This microclimate allows the grapes to retain high acidity. The absolute star of the region is one of Greece's noble grape varieties, offering a very specific profile:

  • Powerful Xinomavro: In Naoussa, an exclusive red wine is made from Xinomavro (meaning "sour black"). It is often compared to Italy's famous Nebbiolo (Barolo wines). The beverage features very firm tannins, high acidity, and aromas of sun-dried tomatoes, black olives, red berries, and spices.
  • Potential: These are among the most age-worthy Greek beverages, making them highly valuable gifts for collectors. Young, they can be a bit harsh, but after 5–10 years in the bottle, they reveal an incredible velvety elegance.

Food pairing tips

Due to their firm structure and abundance of tannins, Naoussa beverages demand protein and fat. They are simply made for traditional Greek dishes: slow-braised lamb, beef steaks, moussaka, or rich meat snacks with hard cheese.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are white beverages produced in the Naoussa region?

According to Naoussa PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) rules, only 100% Xinomavro red wine can be labeled with this name. However, the region's winemakers also produce excellent whites (e.g., from the Malagousia variety), which are labeled under broader appellations.

Is it necessary to decant this wine?

Absolutely. Especially if you are opening a Xinomavro younger than 5–7 years. Decanting for at least 1–2 hours will help soften the firm tannins and open up the complex earthy and dried fruit aromas.

Can rosé variants be found in the assortment?

Although the Naoussa PDO is exclusively for reds, a highly structured rosé wine, perfect for gastronomic pairing, is often pressed from the same Xinomavro grape in the surrounding areas.
