Description

Jurtschitsch Riesling Ried Heiligenstein Erste Lage Kamptal DAC 2022 is a single vineyard (Ried) Riesling from the Zöbing Heiligenstein terraces, classified in the ÖTW “Erste Lage” category. The style here is “Heiligenstein-like”: tense, precise, dry, more about inner energy and mineral backbone than aromatic sweetness. Residual sugar content ~1.0 g/l, acidity ~7.7 g/l.

In the glass, ripe lemon, lime peel and quince tones open up, followed by white flowers, soft spice and a stony (wet rock) nuance. This is not a “tropical” Riesling, but more layered and restrained, with a clear mark of place.

The structure is firmly “bound” in the mouth: bright, precise acidity, medium-full body and a long, precise aftertaste.

Heiligenstein is considered one of the most exclusive “crus” of the Kamptal, and its character is shaped by Permian rocks: poor, well-drained desert sandstone with an admixture of volcanic inclusions. This geology forces the roots to go deep and often gives the wines a spicy minerality and longevity.

The grapes are hand-picked and selected selectively. The wine is aged in large wooden barrels: the must is fermented and the wine is further aged in 2,000-liter local oak barrels, with natural yeasts.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 8-10 °C with white fish with fattier sauces, poultry with sauces, and seafood.

About brand

Jurtschitsch is located at the historic Sonnhof Estate in northern Austria, in the renowned Kamptal wine region. The estate’s cellar history dates back to the 14th century, when the land was cultivated by monks. In 1868, the property was acquired by the Jurtschitsch family, who have since preserved winemaking traditions with deep respect for nature while embracing innovation.

Innovation leaders in Austrian winemaking

Over time, Jurtschitsch has become one of the most forward-thinking wineries in Kamptal. They were pioneers in the region to:

  • Filter and bottle their own wines (previously done by intermediaries)
  • Adopt organic viticulture as early as 1972
  • Champion single-vineyard wines, highlighting terroir—the influence of soil, climate, and site on wine character

Today, the name Jurtschitsch stands worldwide for exceptional quality, consistency, and sustainability.

Vineyards and key grape varieties

The majority of the vineyards are dedicated to white grape varieties, with particular focus on:

  • Grüner Veltliner – Kamptal’s flagship variety, celebrated for its minerality and freshness
  • Riesling – expressive, complex, and capable of long aging

The family works meticulously with single-vineyard bottlings, emphasizing natural diversity and terroir expression—an approach highly regarded by wine professionals and collectors.

GruVe – where art meets wine

Since 1987, Jurtschitsch has released a special “GruVe” Grüner Veltliner each year, featuring a label designed annually by a different artist. It is not only a high-quality dry white wine, but also an ongoing art project that attracts wine lovers and creatives around the world.
