Planeta Eruzione Rosso 1614 Pinot Nero 2023

Description

Planeta Eruzione Rosso 1614 Pinot Nero 2023 is an exceptional Sicilian red wine, born on the slopes of Mount Etna, where ‘Pinot Nero’ takes on a completely different face than in Burgundy or other classic regions of this aristocratic grape variety. The name “Eruzione 1614” recalls the historic eruption of Mount Etna in 1614, which lasted for as long as a decade and formed today’s black volcanic lava soils. Planeta creates an extremely small-scale, organically grown wine here from high-altitude vineyards in the Sciaranuova area, more than 800 meters above sea level.

The aroma reveals the unexpected and very ethnic character of ‘Pinot Nero’: notes of flint, volcanic ash, ink, wild plums and cherries intertwine with subtle forest floor and light smoky nuances. The aromatic profile is elegant, but with a more rigid mineral line provided by the volcanic terroir.

The wine is lively, medium-weight, with very precise acidity and velvety, but energetic tannins. In the mouth, there is a combination of cherries, cranberries, wild berries and delicate spices, complemented by a mineral, slightly iron aftertaste. This is a very elegant, but not classic ‘Pinot Nero’ – Etna adds more tension, verticality and volcanic character. The wine has excellent structure and can mature for another 5-10 years.

The grapes are grown on black lava sand soils, surrounded by forests and newer lava flows. The high altitude and sharp temperature differences between day and night allow for a fresh and aromatic precision. This terroir combines volcanic minerality with the elegance of a cooler climate – which is why the wine is often compared to the high-class Burgundy style, but retains a strong Sicilian identity.

The wine is fermented in open tonneaux vessels using gentle manual immersion, then aged for about 6 months in used French oak barrels and partially in stainless steel tanks.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 14 - 16°C with roasted duck breast, turkey, grilled veal dishes, medium-hard or mature (Epoisses) cheeses.
