The Bairrada wine region is located in western Portugal, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Dão mountains. It is renowned for its fresh, structured wines shaped by a cool maritime climate and clay-limestone soils. Winemaking here dates back to the 10th century, and today Bairrada is regarded as a symbol of Portugal’s modern winemaking renaissance.
The main red grape variety, ‘Baga’, gives the wines firm tannic structure, great ageing potential, and elegant acidity that evolves over time into silky, complex textures. Alongside ‘Baga’, varieties such as ‘Touriga Nacional’, ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ and ‘Syrah’ add depth and a more contemporary expression.
Bairrada is also famous for its white wines made from ‘Bical’, ‘Arinto’ and ‘Maria Gomes’, which display minerality, citrus-driven freshness and a subtle creaminess. These grapes are also used to craft exceptional sparkling wines – espumante – considered among the finest in Portugal due to their natural acidity and precision.
The region’s cool, humid climate and the influence of Atlantic winds ensure slow, even ripening, preserving both aromatic clarity and freshness. The predominantly clay and limestone soils impart structure, depth and a distinctive mineral profile.
