Chateau Petrus

1–1 of 1

Pétrus (often referred to as “Château Pétrus”) is the iconic estate of the Pomerol appellation on the right bank of Bordeaux, whose reputation has been built not through official classifications – Pomerol has none – but through consistently exceptional quality and extremely limited production. It is a small, contiguous vineyard of around 11.4 hectares on the Pomerol plateau, regarded as one of the clearest benchmarks of the appellation.

At the heart of Pétrus’ uniqueness lies its exceptional terroir: a very high proportion of iron-rich blue clay, found only in a small part of the Pomerol plateau and, in the case of Pétrus, covering almost the entire vineyard. This clay retains moisture effectively and helps the vines maintain balance even in drier years. It is one of the key reasons why the wine displays such remarkable textural depth and ageing potential.

The style of the estate is also defined by a clear varietal focus: today Pétrus is produced exclusively from ‘Merlot’ (since the late 2010s) and does not make a second wine, meaning that all attention is concentrated on a single, rigorously selected grand vin expression. The estate is owned by the Jean-François Moueix family; its legend was shaped after the Second World War by Edmonde Loubat and Jean-Pierre Moueix, and today the work continues under the Moueix family and their team.

The status of Pétrus today is that of a “quiet legend”: an extremely small estate, a clearly defined terroir signature, strict selection, and discreet distribution have created a wine that, in the world of collectors and professionals, has become synonymous with Pomerol and one of the most sought-after wines of all.
