Read moreSituated on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg mountains, the estate enjoys perfect climate conditions—cool Atlantic breezes slow down grape ripening, giving them exceptional concentration. The winery follows traditional methods: fermentation takes place in open concrete tanks, and the wine is aged extensively in French oak barrels. This provides the beverages with firm structure, elegance, and immense aging potential.
While "Kanonkop" crafts excellent Cabernet Sauvignon and Paul Sauer Bordeaux-style blends, they are best known as the foremost experts of South Africa's native grape—Pinotage. Their Pinotage wines feature notes of dark plums, blackberries, spices, and earth. Unlike cheap mass-produced examples, this estate's Pinotage is incredibly complex and age-worthy.
The powerful and rich Stellenbosch wine demands protein-rich food. It pairs perfectly with charcoal-grilled red meat, especially beef steaks or venison, as well as rich beef stews. These wines also wonderfully complement aged hard cheeses found in our wine snacks selection.
Do "Kanonkop" wines need to be decanted?
Yes, especially if you are opening a "Paul Sauer" or a higher-tier "Pinotage." We recommend decanting for at least 1–2 hours to soften the tannins and release the aromas.
Who is this wine best gifted to?
It makes a flawless and solid gift for New World wine enthusiasts and those looking for a strong-character, collectible wine.
